Edo Queens fought back from a goal down to beat title holders Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 Saturday night to reach the semifinal of the CAF Women’s Champions League ongoing in Rabat, Morocco.
And Nigeria Football Federation president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau is excited by the prospect of the team reaching the final and laying their hands on the $600,000 top prize.
“The Edo Queens exhibited the much-talked-about Nigeria spirit to come from behind and defeat the Cup holders,” Mr. Gusau said.
“Theirs is a statement in resilience, determination and ambition. I believe they have been highly inspired by that victory and have the capacity to go all the way and win the title.”
He urged the team to up their game as they tackle TP Mazembe in the semifinal and AS FAR of Morocco confront Masar of Egypt in the other game.
Edo Queens inspired by former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki and Edo State Sports Commission chairman Yusuf Alli are making their debut in the continent.
After winning the Nigeria Women League for the first time, they went on to conquer the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers. Edo Queens would be making a monumental history if they clinch the African title.
