Out going US President Joe Biden has lifted restrictions on the use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to strike deeper inside Russia.
This is coming on heels of Russia escalating the conflict by unleashing waves of attacks against Ukraine and amassing thousands of North Korean to its border with Ukraine.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has for long cried for the US and its allies to allow his troops to strike Russia with long range weapons such as the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMs.
President-elect Donald Trump, promised to end the war. He called on Russia to descalate, but President Vladimir Putin it seems is bent on sustaining the conflict. Trump said last week he would support Ukraine, if Putin refused his peace plan.
The US authorisation will also have a further knock-on effect: enabling the UK and France to grant Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia. Storm Shadow is a Franco-British long-range cruise missile with similar capabilities to the American ATACMS.
