Super Eagles coach Austin Eguaveon has been lamenting his team lack of goal scoring after they dominated Rwanda but lost 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Monday night in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
It was glaring during the match that despite having a great share of possession, they Super Eagles failed to find a creative spark that will unlock the Rwandan defence and also, chances that came their way not buried.
“Goals win games, we all know that. They are scoring goals in their club sides; they are scoring goals in training. But when it comes to the game, they don’t score goals. I keep asking the same questions,” said Eguavoen.
“But you know there are some players who can make a difference, who can put the ball into space for them to go to goal. But we are still looking for that player who has that flair and creativity. A good playmaker who can put the ball into space for them.”
Speaking on Victor Boniface’s lack of goal scoring he added: “Boniface, we all know what he’s capable of doing, especially for his club and when he comes back here, we try to give him a lot of confidence and playing time but he’s not hitting the back of the net for whatever reason.
“I’ve spoken to him personally many times. I’m someone who wants to give players confidence.
“I’ve done enough, but he’s still part of the squad and will remain a part of the squad,” Eguavoen told the press after Nigeria’s game against Rwanda yesterday evening.”
