Delta State Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori and top ex footballers and distinguished personalities, are expected at the Sapele Township Stadium, Frida November 29 to witness veteran soccer stars trade tackles in a novelty match, among other activities slated for the burial of former Green Eagles goalkeeper Coach Peter Fregene – Okpogoro.
Coach Peter Fregene succumbed to the pangs of death a month ago after a protracted illness at the age of 77 years in Sapele, Delta State barely two months ago.
Fregene who became a coach with several Division One club-sides after an excellent goalkeeping feat with the national senior team, Green Eagles for fifteen years, took ill while on a voluntary coaching engagement, in a program he tagged ” Catch them young” while grooming the junior football talents at the old Sapele Sports Stadium.
According to the Chairman of the burial committee and ace footballer Mr. Larry Kubeinje, top footballers including Coach Fregene contemporaries from Lagos and other parts of the country are being led by “Mathematical” Segun Odegbami while the Delta state governor is parading sports men and women in his entourage to the venue.
The events leading to the final journey of the former national team goalie commence on Wednesday 27th November with a Service of Songs ceremony at Okotie-Eboh Grammar School Field, Sapele and internment at his hometown Abraka on Friday followed by other ceremonies in Sapele.
Close sources revealed that retinues of the old stock of footballers under the umbrella of “All Stars” from Warri, Benin, Ughelli and Bayelsa are being hosted by the Sapele team, in what they described as another opportunity for the Stars to come together again and felicitate with High Chief Felix Anirah, patron of FENIRAH FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT and Hon,(Evang) Michael Diden, Proprietor, Ejele Football Academy as chief hosts.
