Gospel star singer Osinachi Joseph Egbu a.k.a Sinach and music producer Michael Oluwole a.k.a Maye appeared in court Wednesday to battle for copyrights to the hit song “Way Maker.”
In a suit number FHC/L/CS/402/2024 at a Federal High Court Lagos, Maye is praying the court to grant him co-ownership of the song and a N5billion compensation. He submitted that the song which produced in 2015 was a joint effort between him and Sinach, but she has refused to compensate him for his work and prevented him from benefitting from licensing of the song rights.
Maye also asked the court for a perpetual injunction against further unauthorized reproduction or performance of the song, and recognition of his performer’s rights, which he claimed were infringed upon.
Sinach’s lawyer Emeka Etiaba SAN argued that Maye cannot lay claim to “Way Maker” because it was written and performed the song, before Maye’s involvement, which was mixing and mastering of the recorded version. He added that Maye was duly paid for his work.
