Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter said Chelsea star player Cole Palmer was lucky to escape an injury that could end his career after he was hacked down in last weekend’s game by Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi.
Palmer needed treatment in the first half of the encounter Chelsea won 2-1. Replays showed that Ndidi stamped his studs down the back of Palmer’s heel with a challenge from behind. Ndidi got a yellow for the tackle.
“It doesn’t always take excessive force to snap someone’s Achilles,” Winter told Express Sport.
“Ndidi shouldn’t have been anywhere near his [Palmer’s] Achilles because the ball was at the front. He couldn’t get it.
“Just when you want things to calm down and talk about football, 20 minutes in, referees are in the spotlight again. I don’t think it’s a good time to be a referee at the moment.”
