A Nigeria Customs officer his wife and their four children have died after their home in Olowpoku area of Ede Osun State was razed by a dawn fire.
The officer Tijani Kabiru, his wife, and four children were fast asleep when the fire caused by an electric spark from the solar panel installed on the roof of the building, started to rage at about 3.00am Monday morning.
“One of the children, a 13-year-old, was awake and reading when the fire started. He noticed his father and family members were overcome by smoke,” a Neighbour told The Nation.
“Although he managed to escape and raise the alarm, the security setup of the house, including electric barbed wires and fortified doors, made rescue efforts challenging.”
The surviving child who remains in shock from the trauma is under medical observation.
Osun State Fire Service spokesperson Adekunle Ibraheem confirmed the incident. “The bodies of the victims have been handed over to officers from the A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.”
