Delta State governor’s radio silence on the death of Okuama community leaders in military custody has riled up families of the deceased.
James Oghoroko who is the president-general of the Okuama Community and Dennis Okugbaye who is treasurer, died six days apart early December in military detention. The leaders have been in custody since they were arrested, alongside four others when they reported to the army headquarters in August 2024 in the wake of the death of 15 soldiers in the Okuama in March 2024.
Speaking on the issue Mr. Zik Gbemre a social commentator and critic said in a statement Sunday that governor Oborevwori’s silence was shameful.
“The deaths of two Okuama leaders in military detention and the unlawful detention of others expose the escalating failure of institutions in the State,” Gbemre said.
“It is deeply shameful that as the Chief Security Officer of the state, Oborevwori has not taken steps to call the army to order. What is unfolding in Delta is appalling and inciting.”
“Rather than stand up for the rights of Okuama people, key stakeholders have remained passive, leaving the community to endure such hardship.”
