President Bola Tinubu whose election in 2023 was marred by controversy has called on Economic Community of West African States member nations to draw inspiration from Ghana and put their countries in the path of political stability.
Ghanaians on December 7 voted to elect a new President in a free and fair election, which was won the opposition National Democratic Congress’s John Mahama. Before the results were made official by the Electoral Commission, the ruling New Patriotic Party candidate and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia called to congratulation Mr. Mahama.
Speaking Sunday at the opening day of the 66th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS in Abuja, President Tinubu said: “I urge all of us in the region to learn from this good democratic practice and prioritise our country’s national unity to ensure political stability of the region so that this manner of peaceful transition becomes the culture of democracy not only in West Africa but also in the entire Africa continent.
“Mahamudu Bawumia, together with the leadership of the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat and accepted the outcome of the Presidential election by congratulating the President-elect, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama of National Democratic Congress (NDC)
“This gesture, as it happened in Nigeria in 2015, demonstrates political maturity and respect for the will of the people of Ghana.
Tinubu who is into second term as ECOWAS Chairman reiterated his desire to make more impact in regional integration, economic growth, conflict resolution, and counterterrorism efforts.
