The University of Abuja has been renamed the Yakubu Gowan University after Nigeria’s war time military head of state General Yakubu Gowan.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that the decision was taken during Monday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The National Assembly is expected that give approval to the name change.
He said the renaming of the University in the nation’s capital city was in honour of General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
The University of Abuja was in 1988 with three colleges namely: College of Arts and Education; College of Law, Management and Social Sciences; and College of Science and Agriculture. It now runs over 256 course The University of Abuja has a student population of 55, 364 and a staff strength of 3, 362.
