West Ham United have sacked coach Julen Lopetegui following their streak of poor form that has left them 14th on the Premier League table.
Lopetegui took over from David Moyes in the summer and he struggled with the team despite reinforcements. They recorded six wins from 20 games and West Ham seem to have enough the Spanish manager after last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.
The Hammers are now in talks with former Chelsea coach Graham Potter as a potential replacement. Potter has been out of work since he left the Blues in April 2023 following a successful stint at Brighton.
West Ham supporters are blaming club directors Tim Steidten and David Sullivan for failing to renew the contract of coach Moyes who led to two consecutive top seven finish in the Premier League and also winning the 2022–23 UEFA Europa Conference League.
West Ham legend Tony Cottee said of club chiefs: “They should hang their heads in shame.
“Tim Steidten, the board, it’s a pathetic appointment in the first place and I can’t believe what they do at times. West Ham is my club but it was just so the wrong appointment.
“Yes you can blame Lopetegui… But Tim Steidten is the director of football, David Sullivan is in charge of the club. They’ve got to take responsibility, they can’t keep making these stupid mistakes.
“If you get rid of one of West Ham’s most successful managers in terms of trophies then you’ve got to make the right appointment.”
