Outgoing US Vice President Kamala Harris in her position of the president of the US Senate Monday was face the task of certifying President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in last November election in which he beat Harris squarely.
Harris presided over the ceremony of the certification of Mr. Trump who on January 6, 2021, refused to accept that he lost the election to outgoing President Joe Biden. Trump was accused of inciting his supporters to disrupt the process in Congress. Five persons including police officers lost their lives. But in 2025 there was no such incident as the 78-year-old Republican was given all clear in Congress.
Mr Trump has said he plans to pardon some of the more than 1,500 people charged with taking part in the 6 January 2021 assault on the Capitol.
Harris described her described her role in the certification as a “sacred obligation” to ensure the peaceful transfer of power. She joined a short list of other vice presidents to oversee the ceremonial confirmation of their election loss as part of their role of presiding over the Senate.
In a video message earlier today, Ms Harris, who became the Democratic frontrunner against Mr Trump following Mr Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race in July, said: “As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile.
“And it is up to each of us to stand up for our most cherished principles.”
