Just as Nigerian football fans are still trying to digest Tuesday’s announcement of Eric Chelle Sekou as the new coach of the Super Eagles, first choice candidate Toni Conceição has denied asking for too much money, for which he was overlooked for the job.
The Portugues who previously coached Cameroon Lions said through his representatives that contrary to reports he asked for $120,000 a month, he never reached any concreate agreement with the NFF before the Eric Chelle announcement was made.
“Our attention has been drawn to recent reports in the Nigeria media claiming that Toni Conceiçao demanded a salary of $120,000 per month to assume the role of Head Coach for the Nigeria National Team. We wish to categorically state that these reports are entirely false and should be disregarded,” said a statement signed his representatives.
“While there was indeed some interest expressed, no concrete discussions or agreements were reached between Toni Conceiçao and the relevant authorities. The circulating figures and claims are purely speculative and lack any factual basis”.
Nigerians have been divided on the appointment of Eric Chelle. While some questioned his credentials and his competence to handle the job, others have expressed optimism the French and Malian born tactician can revive the Super Eagles failing World Cup qualifiers campaign which resume in March.
