An Enugu housewife whose hand was cut off at the wrist by her husband said she had suffered domestic violence several times, before the incident, which has left her scarred for life.
Mrs Chinonso Echege who spoke to BBC pigin from her hospital bed said she raised up her hands to defend herself when her husband unleashed the machete on her during a scuffle in their residence at Ibeagwa near Nsukka Enugu State.
“This is not the first time my husband was beating me,” said Echege who is a nursing mother.
“There was a time, he beat me and burnt all my things I had to run to my father’s house with my baby, we stayed there for two years. I came back September 2024.
“He came to my father’s house to beg for forgiveness promising never to lay his hand on me again saying that it was the devil that pushed him to beat me.
“My people told him what to do and advised me to go back to him.
” It was not long he started doing the same thing all over again. The yams we planted, he took everything and sold them off and he started beating me and seized my phone, he broke the SIM card to pieces.”
She stated that she run to her mother in-law for safety.
“But When I returned home to prepare for Church that was when he attacked me and was aim to cut off my head and I hand to defend myself with my hands, that was when he cut off my hand.
“After he ran into the bush to hide, but the village people searched for him and handed him over to the police.”
Enugu State police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the case is under investigation, while the suspect remains in custody. He told the police that he committed the crime because he suspected that his wife was cheating on him.
