The political upheaval in Rivers State escalated Monday as the Rivers State House of Assembly ordered the arrest of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd).
This was based on his refusal to appear before the lawmakers to explain his reasons for rescheduling a date for the Rivers Local Government elections after the Supreme Court nullified October 2024 local government elections due to noncompliance with electoral laws.
Justice Enebeli and his commissioners did not appear during the three days window given to them to do so, rather the RSIEC filed a suit at the State High Court challenging the resolutions of the lawmakers. Three of the commissioners have so far resigned their appointments, they include Lazberry Nnah, Professor Simeon Weli and Ibierembo Everlyn Thompson, who announced her decision on Monday.
Meanwhile in another development the All-Progressives Congress called on governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or be impeached.
According to APC Rivers chairman Tony Okocha, Fubara failed to submit his budget for 2025 as requested by the 27 APC lawmakers reinstated by the Supreme Court.
“The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the Governor now is for him to resign or be impeached,” Okocha stated.
“We have directed members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence the impeachment process of a comatose government. The Governor’s head has become bigger than his pillow. He does not respect the law.
“He does anything he cares to do. We will not sit here as Rivers people to see Rivers State become a laughing stock in the comity of states, when we have a Governor who does not know his left from his right.”
