The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been urged to block all access to pornographic sites in the country.
This order was handed down by the Nigeria House of Representatives. It called on the NCC to compel all internet services providers to block adult contents with immediate effect. Dalhatu Tafoki APC lawmaker from Katsina who sponsored the motion argued that pornography is of major concern globally and Nigeria need to step up as other countries in Asia and Africa have taken measures to restrict pornography.
While presenting the motion, Tafoki submitted that cyber pornography is a growing global concern and noted that Nigeria has not done enough to tackle the issue.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” Tafoki said, adding that all religious faiths in Nigeria abhor pornography.
Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives subjected the motion to a voice vote where the lawmakers voted in support of it.
The House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
