The Nigeria Rowing, Canoeing and Sailing Federation has launched the Ibom Rowing, Canoeing and Sailing Club with a promise to make the sport more popular in the Niger Delta region.
This is a fallout of the recent Niger Delta Sports Festival where rowing and canoeing featured with a lot of promises. The Ibom Rowing, Canoeing, & Sailing Club was launched at the Marina Waterfront of the five-star Ibom Hotels in Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom State recently.
The launch was presided over by the Nigeria Canoeing and Sailing Federation president Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni Rtd, with secretary general Olubunmi Ola Oluode, technical director Mr Ebenezer Ayomide Bello who is also the African number 1, world number eight- and two-times Olympian, and Mr King Okon the Sports consultant and the Club Promoter also in attendance.
The Local Government chairman of Uruan LGA represented by Comrade Liberty Usanga was on hand to receive the guests. Also present to grace the occasion was Bayelsa State director of sports Sir Braveman Wodi, Rivers State Head of Delegation Mr Gabriel Opuana who alongside Obong Ntiense Williams popularly known as Mr Rugby also represented the Sports Coaches Association of Nigeria SCAN!
It was a thing of pride to also honour the occasion with the presence of the first female architect in Akwa Ibom State Arc Mrs Dorothy Ekanem and Mrs Eme Essien.
Meanwhile, Sports Coaches Association of Nigeria president Gabriel Opuana said at the occasion that Rowing, Canoeing and Sailing will be the first benefactrices of a Coaching Training Program in Nigeria the association is packaging.
“It’s our goal to training local coaches in all sports and we are pursuing sponsors to make this happen.
“Sports like rowing, canoeing and sailing which is a growing sports worldwide will be the first beneficiaries of the training of coaches and also the very young athletes who are keen and very enthusiastic to grow with the sport,” said Mr. Opuana a former national hammer champion.
