Akwa Ibom State governor Umo Eno Thursday received the “Torch of Unity” ahead head the 22nd National Sports Festival billed to start May 16 in Abeokuta Ogun State.
The “Torch of Unity” is expected to make several stops around the country, before returning to Ogun State on May 14, and burn throughout the during of the games.
In a colourful ceremony held at the Government House Uyo, Governor Eno represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah said Akwa Ibow was ready to participate and win at the “Gateway Games.” Other dignitaries at the event include Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Sports Paul Bassey, Director of Sports Brigid Otton, Director of Coaching Catherine Ewa.
Meanwhile Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, has reiterated their ready to roll with the Games. He all facilities would be ready before the start of the sports fiesta, adding that it would be one of the best ever in the country.
“We are fully prepared. The facilities speak for themselves,” Isiaka said during a tour the venues.
“We are working around the clock to ensure every necessary structure is in place.
“By the time the games begin, Ogun State will be more than ready.”
He said Ogun will aim to host and win in face of fierce competition from Delta, Rivers, Lagos and also Bayelsa State.
“Don’t forget we are wearing two caps at this forthcoming National Sports Festival apart from being the host of Gateway Games, we are competitors, and we want to also do well as the host too,” he added.
