Delta State House of Representatives members elected under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party have all left to join the All-Progressives Congress.
Speaker of the House Hon. Tajudeen Abbas told the assembly on Tuesday that all eight members of the Delta State caucus have left the PDP to join the APC, following in the footsteps of Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevworie, his commissioners and supporters. Former Delta governor Ifeanyi Okowa also join the APC causing some ripples in the political landscape.
Meanwhile a member of the Delta State House of Assembly Hon. Austin Uroye who together with his colleagues also tore up their PDP memberships cards and joined the APC explained that it was a grand consensus by all PDP members to leave the party in Delta State.
“It was a like a family decision; we can only look forward to a greater development in Delta State,” Hon Uroye stated.
Meanwhile, a civil society group, Concerned Citizens of Delta State, said governor Oborevworie and Dr. Okowa betrayed all Deltans by joining the APC.
“There were never discussions on the movement with or approved by the people whose mandate these individuals claim to carry. Governor Oborevwori and Senator Okowa acted purely out of personal interest, not in service to the state.
“This act is not just political opportunism, it is a direct insult to every hardworking Deltan. These leaders, who owe their positions to the people, have now turned their backs in pursuit of selfish gain,” the group said in a statement signed by its president, Evans Ufeli.
“Our future does not lie with politicians who change parties like garments. It lies in the collective will of the people to demand better and do better. We are Deltans, we choose integrity, and we will not be silenced,” he added.
