Rivers’ contingent to the 22nd National Sports Festival has one aim in Abeokuta, Ogun State when Gateway Games begin and that is to top the medals table.
This was after Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd) approved a massive bonus for all medals that would be won at the Gateway Games by Rivers’ athletes.
Before the contingent departed for Abeokuta on Thursday, Vice Admiral Ibas represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, during a farewell ceremony held at the University of Port Harcourt training camp, announced that gold medal winners will receive ₦2m, silver medalists N1m and bronze medalists N500,000.
This is the first time athletes would be getting such a bumper motivational package in their participation in the sports festival.
“Rivers State believes in you. His Excellency is investing in your victory because you represent the pride, strength, and future of our state,” Prof. Worika told the athletes
“This is the most generous reward scheme in Nigeria—now go out there, dominate the competition, and bring glory to Rivers State!
“You’ve trained hard; now it’s time to shine. Be champions on the field and ambassadors of excellence.”
Also speaking at the occasion acting head of service Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown urged the athletes to strive for victory in whatever events they represent Rivers State.
“No other state is offering what Rivers State is giving you. This is your time—go out and claim your victory!”, she proclaimed.
Rivers State director of sports Ibigoni Benjamin Akubo assured that the athletes are well prepared to give their best in Abeokuta.
