A gas explosion Tuesday rocked the Alake Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State — one of the venues for the ongoing National Sports Festival.
The explosion occurred when a gas truck supplying fuel to one of the generators in the complex suddenly caught fire and subsequently exlposed. There was no record of any casuality to athletes or officials participating in the Sports Fiesta already in its third day.
Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene and were able to contain the fire before it spread or caused significant damage.
The venue is hosting sports like handball, squash, and badminton.
The local organising committee have yet to issue a statement on the blast which caused panic amongst the athletes and officials at the venue. Sporting activities are expected to resume in full swing on Wednesday.
