Minnesota governor Tim Walz announced Monday that the suspect in the killing of politician Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman has been captured by the police after a three-day manhunt.
The suspect 57-year-old Vance Boelter who also injured another couple Democrat senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in his shooting spree last Saturday, was arrested by the police without incident on Sunday night.
He faces two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder in the deaths of the Hortmans and the wounding of Hoffman and his wife.
Speaking at a press conference with other local officials, governor Walz said the attack was an “unspeakable act” that had “altered the state of Minnesota”.
“This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences,” Walz said.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the “skill and bravery” of law enforcement agencies following Boelter’s arrest.
“Political violence is abhorrent, it cuts against the most basic moral fabric of our democracy. It’s critical that those who commit these acts be held accountable under the law,” he added.
