Israel Tuesday claimed that newly appointed Iran army chief of staff, Ali Shadmani has been eliminated during an overnight strike on the capital Tehran.
Shadmani was appointed to the position after General Gholam Ali Rashi head of the Iranian army was killed in last Friday’s strikes by Israel at army and nuclear facilities locations.
“Following precise intelligence received by the IDF (army) Intelligence Directorate and a sudden opportunity overnight (Tuesday), the IAF (air force) struck a staffed command center in the heart of Tehran and eliminated Ali Shadmani, the wartime chief of staff,” the Israeli army said in a statement.
There has been no comment from Iran on the Israeli statement so far. But it claimed that the Iran’s Revolutionary Guards hit Israel’s Military Intelligence Directorate and spy agency Mossad’s operational centre early on Tuesday. There was no Israeli confirmation of such attacks.
Meanwhile Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has warned Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei he could suffer a fate “similar to” Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, who was toppled and later executed.
Katz warned Khamenei risked “a fate similar to Saddam Hussein” during a meeting with Israeli military and security service commanders, according to a statement from his office.
“I warn the Iranian dictator against continuing to commit war crimes and launch missiles toward Israeli civilians,” Katz was quoted as saying.
“He should remember what happened to the dictator in the neighbouring country to Iran who took the same path against Israel.”
