Nigeria’s Super Falcons after an impressive 3-1 win over the Black Queens of Ghana in a friendly on Sunday, are aiming to be first team to win the newly introduced Women African Cup of Nations trophy and also the newly improved $2.4m top prize money.
The Confederation of African Football will unveil a new trophy starting from the 2025 tournament, which begins on July 6 in Morocco. CAF said the trophy will be unveiled Wednesday July 2.
“The new trophy is part of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop Women’s Football in Africa.
“CAF will launch the trophy on its digital pages in the afternoon, followed by an activation event with sponsors, TotalEnergies, on the same day in the evening,” said a statement made by CAF.
Group A: Morocco, Zambia, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana
Group C: South Africa, Ghana, Mali and Tanzania
The WAFCON is a qualifier for the FIFA Women World Cup later in the year.
Speaking on his team’s chances of achieving the feat of winning the trophy, the top prize and also winning their 10th WAFCON title coach Justine Madugu said: “We are very focused on our realisable and achievable target of Mission X.
“The girls are ready and are showing real hunger for victory and team spirit is high. We are looking forward to our first match on Sunday against Tunisia.
“We will continue to work on our weak areas, and I believe that by the time of our first match, we will be ready,” Madugu added.
