The Chinese embassy in Accra has denied that its citizens are involved in illegal gold Minning known locally as “Galamsey.”
According to reports by China Morning Post the dispute between the African largest gold producer and China has led to a global price rise in the commodity.
Chinese firms have increased investment in Ghana’s gold sector, but the alleged participation of Chinese nationals in illicit mining operations has sparked significant controversy. The situation has led China’s ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, to publicly counter accusations leveled against Chinese citizens.
Ghana has for many years battled with illegal gold miners to increase its revenue base and also stop the pollution of rivers, forests and cocoa farmlands in the country.
But according to reports many of the mines are licensed to Ghanaians who in turn invite Chinese’s businessmen who are keen to make quick gains on their investments, thereby under-cutting regulations.
