The Ghanaian police have in custody 25 Nigerians who have been accused of engaging in cybercrime and kidnapping.
The bubble burst on the syndicate operating from Sasaabi a community in the Greater Accra Region where a young Nigerian kidnapped by the gang and forced into their operations alerted the Ghanaian investigating authorities.
His mother was contacted in Nigeria and she confirmed that the youngman was her son who has been missing for some time. Base on the information a 12 man team of the Ghana police and Cyber Security Authority (CSA), raided the hideout of the criminals and 25 persons were arrested and 20 other individuals held against their will by the gang freed.
Over 40 laptops and 25 mobile phones, believed to have been used in orchestrating financial fraud schemes targeting victims both in Ghana and abroad were confisicated by the police team.
“This operation underscores Ghana’s zero-tolerance policy on transnational cybercrime and our firm resolve to protect individuals, both Ghanaians and foreign nationals, who criminal enterprises exploit,” CSA official told the Graphic.
The gang is being investigated and interrogated for possible collaboration with internataional crime oganisations.
