Competitions of the Confederation of African Athletics U-18/U-20 Championships began with Burkina Faso and South African athletes winning the first gold medals at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
In the women’s U-18 triple jump
Burkina Zango Salisa, jumped 12.79m to capture the gold medal ahead of Masat Kaota of Morocco (12.39m), while Finel Chidi of Tunisia settled for the bronze with a12.26m jump
South Africa’s Natro Ler cleared 2.00m in the U-18 men’s high jump.
Two Nigerians, Ikeki Daniel and Oddo Melvin were second and third, respectively, winning Nigerians first medals of the competition at the time of going to press.
The 100m heats were Heat in both the boys and girls 100m with three Nigerians already through to the boys final.
South African sprinters proved they are athletes to beat ahead of the final bill for Thursday.
