Nigerian women dominated both categories of the 100m event of the CAA U-18/ U-20 Championships on going at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
It was a delightful evening for the home crowd as the Nigerian women made it a 1,2,3 in the U-18 and then gold and silver in the U-20 category.
Their male compatriots had no such bravery as South Africa took the boys U-18 and Kenya the U-20.
Clinton Owatinya clinched the gold with a 10.42secs run, Letebele Karabo clocked 10.54secs for the silver, while Nigeria’s Caleb John tagged along with 10.61secs to settle for third place.
In the boys U-18 South Africa’s Manavhela Mukona, was best with 10.61sec beating off the challenge from compatriot Fourie Jayden who ran 10.76secs. Nigeria’s Clifford Igbigbidje was third with 10.89.
Nigeria had its moment with Miracle Ezechukwu finishing 11.88 to top the girls in the U-18 category. She was chased down by Rosemary Nwankwo who crossed the line at 11.96secs and Funke Jegede who finished third with 12.20secs.
In the U-20 women Chioma Nweke took the gold with 11.65, Success Oyibu was second with 11.78secs.
Chantel Lou Yoman of Cote d’Ivoire with 11.87, just dipped ahead of Chiamaka Nwankwo.
The events continue tomorrow as the hunt for medals intensify for participating countries.
