Throwers Oyesade Olatoye, Chioma Onyekwere and Obiageri Amaechi at the opening day of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria trials for the World Championships, reaffirmed their dominance of the hammer and discuss throws.
The trio representing Enugu State at the trials have remained the untouchables of the Nigerian women throws for four seasons. They proved with their performance that they are not showing any sign of slowing down as they practically battled to match their personal bests at the Yaba College of Technology sports complex in Lagos venue of the contest.
In the hammer throw Oyesade Olatoye heaved 67.50m to clinch the gold, while in the discuss Chioma Onyekwere the national record holder at distance of 64.96m fought off the challenge by teammate Obiageri Amaechi, Onyekwere landed 60.79m, while Amaechi threw 59.90m, a far cry from her season best of 63.01m
Amaechi admitted that competing with Onyekwere brings the best in her, adding that her joy was that she tried new techniques she’s been working on, and she is pleased with the progress.
By entry standard Olatoye, Onyekwere and Obiageri have already booked their places in the World Championships billed for Tokyo, Japan next month. According to coach Gabriel Opuana for now, the ladies are focused on producing a podium performance in Tokyo.
” And of course the next time they would be home to compete would be at the National Sports Festival next year in Enugu State. They are proudly representing Enugu and for sure by the grace of God those are already concluded medals for Enugu State.”
