Athletics Federation of Nigeria president Tonobok Okowa has praised Nigerian athletes for emerging tops at the two-day Confederation of Africa Athletics region two championships held at the University of Ghana sports Complex in Accra, Ghana.
Despite a surprisingly strong challenge from Burkina Faso in the opening day, Nigerian athletes featuring emerging youth talents Treasure Omosivwe and Anita Enaruna garnered 15 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals, while Burkina Faso had seven gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals, Benin was third with six gold, three silver and six bronze.
“Despite the challenges the athletes have done well, they haven’t performed below our expectations, they have also behaved very well and there were no issues in the camp,” said Okowa before the team left Accra Wednesday afternoon.
“All their allowances have been paid and on getting to Lagos, there everyone will be given a transport subsidy of N80,000 to go back to their respective homes.
“We will continue to do our best as federation to ensure that the athletes are well prepared for the next event.”
