An Abuja-Kaduna train service suffered derailment Tuesday morning leaving passengers on board panickily scampering to safety.
The incident happened near the Lere Station approaching Kaduna. The train had departed Abuja at about 11.am. The passengers were evacuated by military personal deployed to the scene of the mishap; according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau six passengers were hurt.
Nigeria Railway Corporation chief publicity officer Callistus Unyimadu said in a statement that the situation was promptly put under control.
The incident is coming days after the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, confirmed that one of the coaches’ wheels on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, AKTS, experienced a hot axle several kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna.
The earlier incident, which occurred on August 20, was attributed to hot wheel friction resulting from abnormal temperatures caused by excessive heat on the journal housing.
Meanwhile former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, said the derailment was due to negligence by the authorities. Writing on his X social media page he said.
“The Abuja-Kaduna train that derailed today is a direct result of negligence by the authorities concerned. For months, passengers have repeatedly complained about their experience on the track but were ignored.
“The expansive bush between Kaduna and Abuja is not a place to be treated lightly.”
