Indigenous People of Biafra separatist Simon Ekpa has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by a Finland court after being convicted on terrorism charges.
According to the court Ekpa who is a dual citizen of Nigeria and Finland participated in a terror organisation and incited crimes against the community in his quest to re-establish the Biafra republic in southeastern Nigeria.
The court said that Ekpa had used his significant social media following to stoke tensions in the Biafra region between August 2021 and November 2024.
“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” said state prosecutor, Sampsa Hakala.
The district court’s ruling further noted that Ekpa had supplied Biafra agitators with weapons, explosives, and ammunition through his network of contacts in the region.
Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities on 21 November 2024, following an investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, an activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
