World record holder in the 100m women hurdles, Tobi Amusan will not hesitate to dump Nigeria if the opportunity present itself.
Amusan who is at the World Championships, which began Saturday in Tokyo, Japan voiced her frustration with the kits supplied to the Nigerian team, which according to her seem inferior and inadequate.
Amusan was not amused that her fellow competitors are well kitted and she had to count on one finger the number of clothing given to her and her teammates.
In a video she captioned “Na which country dey look for athletes” and posted online, she laid out the items, exclaiming that the quality of the product supplied was an embarrassment to Nigerian athletes and to Nigeria.
“Other countries have a suitcase of supplies and we Nigeria, it’s just a tiny plastic bag of clothing. It is the same year in year out,” said Amusan.
She added that, she only got competition kits, which are not befitting. There’s no sweat shirt and out of competition wear.
Stung by her video post, National Sports Commission director-general Bukola Olapade pressured her to take down the video, while he scrambled to make up for the shortfall.
It was gathered that an individual within the Nigerian sports circle had brought in the kits with the brand name Hiracer and it was a last minute arrangement.
“While other athletes are well kitted by their country, our athletes are supplied with what I may call left over clothing,” said an athletics official.
“Someone within the NSC negotiated for the kits at the last minute and so the company hurriedly scrambled those wears.
“Besides that we don’t know what is in it for the athletes and the AFN, if they wear the Hiracer kit at the world championships.”
