London Mayor Sadiq Khan has denied President Donald Trump’s claim that the mayor wants to impose Islamic sharia law in England’s capital city.
The president made the claim while addressing the U.N. General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday, which prompted Khan to call Trump “racist, sexist and Islamophobic,” while denying the claim, The Telegraph reported.
“People are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive, successful city, that means I appear to be living rent-free in Donald Trump’s head,” Khan told reporters on Wednesday.
“President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic, and he is Islamophobic,” Khan added.
The London mayor said, “record numbers of Americans” are traveling to England’s capital, which he called “the greatest city in the world.”
While speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said London has “changed” since Khan became its mayor in 2016.
“I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor — terrible, terrible mayor — and it’s been so changed,” Trump told the audience.
“Now they want to go to sharia law,” the president continued. “Both their immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe.”
Khan is the first Muslim to become the mayor of a Western nation’s capital city.
Sharia law refers to the convergence of the Islamic religion and law and is intended to guide Muslims regarding spiritual and legal matters, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.
