Delta State governor Sheriff Oborevworie and failed ministerial nominee Stella Okotete have been accused of clamping a journalist Tega Oghenedoro in police detention for allegedly authoring reports that caused Okotete her political ambition and Oborevworie discomfort.
According to reports by Peoples Gazette Tuesday, Oghenedoro also known as Fejiro Oliver was picked up by police based on petitions filed by Miss Okotete who lost her ministerial nomination to be in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet in 2023. Okotete, 40, blamed Oghenedoro for her misfortune.
Oghenedoro was arrested on September 19 in Abuja and flown to Asaba in a private jet made available by the Delta State governor. Ms Okotete is pressing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Asaba to prolong his detention for alleged defamation.
“She wrote to the police, insisting that Oliver should not be released anytime soon,” a police source was quoted by Peoples Gazette.
It was also gathered that Mr. Oghenedoro has also published reports which were critical of governor Oborevworie and Senator representing Delta Central Ede Dafinone. Oghenedoro has spent 11 days in detention, he has been denied a right to a court hearing and also prevented from speaking to his legal counsel.
Media rights organisations have condemned Oghenedoro’s abduction and unlawful detention. They described the move as a blatant attack on press freedom and a worrying reminder of the country’s authoritarian streak.
