Two nannies identified as Francisca Boakye, 30, and Harriet Ansah, 31, have confessed to drugging and torturing twin toddles left in their care so that they could have more time to themselves.
The nannies were arrested in East Legon, Accra, Ghana after the mother of the children a businesswoman noticed that they were always drowsy and sickly, and she promptly reported to the Ghanaian police. Both nannies have been working with the children for eight months.
According to head of public affairs unit of the police, Juliana Obeng, the duo are under detention and would be charged to court on October 20.
On interrogation Boakye a student nurse and Ansah confessed to adding sleeping pills to the milk formular of the toddlers over a long period of time. Ansah told investigators she learned the act from Boakye.
Ansah also revealed that she had subjected the children to other forms of abuse, including striking their heads with fire and referring to them with derogatory names, such as “chimpanzee”.
“They claim the substance made the children sleep for extended hours so they could have time for other things,” Superintendent Obeng told journalists.
A search conducted in the suspects’ living quarters led to the retrieval of two used sachets and four unused sachets containing substances believed to have been used in the alleged offences.
“We urge all parents and guardians to be extra vigilant in the supervision of domestic staff, especially those left in charge of vulnerable persons such as children,” Superintendent Obeng added.
