African Action Congress leader and activist Omoyele Sowore have been urged not to lead any protest to Abuja in solidarity with detained Indigenous People of Biara leader Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore has been rallying round support for the Kanu who has been since 2021 by the Federal government despite court judgements ordering his release. Sowore planned a peaceful march tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow for on October 20 at 7 a.m in Abuja.
But President Bola Tinubu’s adviser on information and strategy Bayo Onanugu said in an X social media post Friday that the planned march would not be allowed to proceed.
“You are nothing more than an anarchist masquerading as a rights activist. You very well know that Nnamdi Kanu is facing trial for treason, and yet you want to cause a breakdown of law and order by mobilising for a protest, such protest cannot be allowed,” Onanugu wrote.
“Is this the kind of revolution you envisage for Nigeria, where the rule of law will be violated and your idea of justice would be the law of the jungle?”
“While the wheel of justice can sometimes be grindingly slow, partly caused by Kanu’s lawyers, Nnamdi Kanu will eventually get the justice he deserves for his alleged transgressions.”
Meanwhile Sowore disclosed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed to approach President Tinubu on Kanu’s continued detention.
Sowore said, “Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan (Goodluck Jonathan) to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu
“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognising the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.
“Particularly assuring was that he promised to meet @officialabat (President Bola Tinubu) to discuss this issue as soon as possible.”
