Cameroonians are hopeful their country remain united and peaceful when the results of the October 12 elections are announced on October 23 by the Cameroon’s Constitutional Council.
So far, the incumbent President Paul Biya and his cronies are hanging to power and claiming victory, while the opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma is brandishing documents he claims confirms he did win the election.
Meanwhile according to DW reports Cameroon’s Constitutional Council is set for a hearing on Wednesday of 11 petitions for a partial or total cancellation of the country’ recent presidential election.
Several opposition figures and parties submitted petitions challenging the electoral process on grounds of alleged irregularities, including logistical failures in certain regions. They allege that ballot boxes were stuffed to favor President Biya.
Earlier Monday, Tchiroma made a direct appeal to outgoing President Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon for 43 years, urging him to respect the will of the people and leave office with honor and integrity. Tchiroma warned against ending such a long reign with blatant electoral fraud.
He also called on Cameroon’s neighboring countries, particularly Nigeria and Chad, as well as the African Union, European Union, United Nations, France, the United States, and other international partners, not to remain silent. He insisted that their voices could play a crucial role in safeguarding peace in Cameroon.
In a statement released by the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (NECC), Catholic Bishops expressed the need for peace and stability.
The clerics said they hoped that the official result would reflect the will of the electorate, and “nothing will be changed by any authority involved in this exercise”.
The Catholic Church is highly respected and is viewed as a moral voice of the nation.
Its statement echoes the sentiments of many, who have urged the Constitutional Council to ensure that the result is not rigged.
