Cameroon’s National Vote Vote Counting Commission indicated that incumbent 92 years-old Paul Biya is leading the count with 53 percent of votes already counted.
And opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary who had earlier claimed victory is tagging behind with 35 percent of the votes counted. He and his supporters have alleged that the election has been rigged in favour of Biya who is seeking an eight term in office.
Tchiroma on Sunday released his own result, which had him leading the count with 60 percent of the ballot.
“I want to say this with gravity and simplicity: the people have made their choice. And that choice must be respected,” Tchiroma said in a statement.
The controversy has stirred tensions in Cameroon. Demonstrations erupted across the country in recent days, with some protesters accusing authorities of electoral fraud.
The Constitutional Council should publish official results by 26 October.
If validated, the outcome would see Biya extend his 42-year rule at the helm of Cameroon. At 92 years old, Biya is already one of the longest-serving leaders in Africa.
