Nigeria’s House of Representatives has passed a motion calling for government’s rapid intervention into the incessant incidents of petro tanker explosions in Niger State.
In the latest incident which occurred Tuesday near the Essan and Badeggi communities along the Bida-Agaie road in the Katcha Local Government Area of Niger state, 42 people lost their lives, while 53 others suffered various degree of injuries in the blast.
The tanker reportedly skidded off the road, crashed and spilled its fuel content, which the villagers were scooping when the explosion happened.
In Wednesday’s plenary session the House of Rep adopted a motion titled “Urgent Need for Intervention on the Recurrent Tanker Explosions, Fatal Accidents, and Gridlock Along the Bida–Agaie–Lapai–Lambata–Diko Road in Niger State”,
Hon. Saidu Musa Abdullahi (SMA), representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency who sponsored the motion said there was huge destruction of lives, goods and property running into millions of naira.
“The continued neglect of this vital highway has turned it into a death trap for motorists, tanker drivers, and traders, while causing frequent gridlocks, destruction of goods, and severe hardship for commuters and residents,” he said.
Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to immediately mobilise resources and contractors to commence full rehabilitation, expansion, and completion of the Bida–Agaie–Lapai–Lambata–Diko Road, especially the sections between Bida and Agaie.
