Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, said Friday he would be ready to testify in the terrorism and treasonable felony trial of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if subpoenaed by the court.
Wike, former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai rtd , Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and other eminent Nigerians were listed as possible witnesses by Mr. Kanu in his defence in the trial ongoing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
While speaking with media representatives in Abuja Wike said: “If you see Nnamdi Kanu, you ask him why he listed me. I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness; So, if you see him, ask him why did you list Wike as one of your witnesses?
“But if I am served, if I am subpoenaed to come and give witness, or to give evidence, I must obey the court, I must appear,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kanu failed to open his defence during Friday’s court hearing. He told the court that his former counsel with whom he parted ways, did not hand over his case file and enable him adequately prepare his defence.
Kanu was slated to open his defence on Thursday, but he informed the court he would no longer retain his legal team led by a former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Kanu Agabi. He pleaded with the court to grant him a short adjournment till Friday. But again on he asked for an adjournment till Monday, October 27, to enable him gain access to the case file and familiarise himself with the contents.
Kanu told the court that he was expecting witnesses from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Kenya and Ethiopia, and applied for an order that the DSS should allow him access to people even on Saturday and Sunday for the purpose of preparing his defence.
Justice James Omotosho adjourned till October 27 and ordered the DSS to allow Kanu receive visitors on Saturday and Sunday.
