Former Bayelsa State governor Timipre Sylva has denied any link to the alleged coup to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.
Mr. Sylva a member of the All-Progressive Congress and also former junior minister for Petroleum Resources during President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime came into focus after his homes in Abuja and Yenagoa, Bayelsa were raided by soldiers.
His special assistant on media Julius Bokoru, said Wednesday that allegations of involvement in the coup the military authorities have denied were “false, baseless, and politically motivated.”
“Chief Timipre Sylva remains a committed democrat and supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These rumours are the handiwork of political opponents trying to tarnish his image ahead of 2027,” Bokoru stated.
He said Mr Sylva and his wife had been out the country for medical purposes.
“As of my last communication with His Excellency, he was undergoing routine medical checks in the United Kingdom, after which he was scheduled to attend a professional conference in Malaysia,” he noted.
However, he confirmed that Sylva’s homes were raided but the military did not give any reason for the action.
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is true that the residence of His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, was recently subjected to a raid by individuals believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters. During the operation, considerable damage was inflicted on the property,” he said.
Mr Sylva’s homes were raided last weekend with some of his aides including his brother named Paga Sylva taken into custody in Abuja.
Meanwhile the presidency said they were sticking with the military’s conclusion there was no coup plot to unseat the government.
“We are going to stick with the Military’s narrative that there was no coup attempt in Nigeria,” said Sunday Dare, a presidential spokesperson, in a chat with TVC.
