Katsina Utd have been banished to Jos, Plateau State and will pay fines totaling N9m after their fans ran riot during Saturday’s Nigeria Premier Football League match against Barau FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
Trouble started when Barau FC scored an equalizing goal in the 69th Minute, bringing the scores to 1-1, but Katsina United fans refused to swallow it, they invaded the pitch attacking match officials.
One of the fans inflicted a cut on the neck of Barau FC midfielder Nana Abraham, luckily it was not life threatening. Abraham was replaced by Hillary Ekawu and the match continued.
The NPFL management said in a statement Sunday, Katsina United have been charged for breaching the Framework & Rules of #NPFL.
“The club failed to provide adequate & effective security resulting in unauthorised persons gaining access to restricted areas.
“Katsina Utd also failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters leading to the harassment of Barau FC players & match officials.
“Supporters of Katsina Utd also threw harmful objects onto the pitch resulting in the injuries of Barau FC players.
“Furthermore, Katsina Utd supporters displayed conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute.
“Katsina Utd will play all their subsequent home matches at the stadium in Jos & behind closed doors.”
The club will pay N9m in fines and cost of medical bills for injury caused to players and match officials.
“Katsina Utd have 48 hours within the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions,” the NPFL added.
