The last gasp attempt by the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup through the back door ended in misery as Congo DR dumped Nigeria after a 4-3 penalty shooting win.
Full time scores were 1-1, after the Super Eagles had taken the lead with a Frank Onyeka’s deflected shot in the 3rd minute. The goal perhaps gave the Super Eagles a false confidence and Congo DR’s Leopard the motivation to fight with their last blood. They bared their fangs and cornered the Super Eagles.
Meschack Elia levelled up after Wilfred Ndidi fumbled with a clearance and the Super Eagles from then were harassed by the Congolese who pushed the Super Eagle to the limit. surprisingly, Coach Eric Chelle hooked Victor Osimhen at half time, Tolu Arokodare came on so did Chidera Ejuke but it was of no use.
Good saves from Stanley Nwabali kept his team in the game till all the 120 minutes were contested and the shootout ensued.
It was a nerve-racking period for players of both teams. Nwabali saved twice as Calvin Bassey skyed his effort and Congo Leopard’s keeper denied Semi Ajayi.
The Leopards will now represent Africa in the intercontinental playoffs in March. While Nigerians football fans lamented the fact they won’t see their national team play again for the second time in row at the World Cup. Better luck in 2030.
The Congolese ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of their fans, who can still dream of a return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when the country was called Zaire.
