Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu has been moved to the correctional centre in Sokoto to serve the life jail sentence passed on him Thursday by a Federal High Court after being found guilty of terrorism charges.
Mr. Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, writing on his X Friday confirmed that Kanu has been moved to prevent him from having access to his family members and legal counsel.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto, so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones, and well-wishers,” Mr Ejimakor wrote.
The lawyer, however, expressed concern over the decision to relocate Mr Kanu to a prison in Sokoto.
“While urging #Ndigbo to remain calm, I must question the wisdom of sending #MNK to Sokoto prison. When Awolowo was convicted in 1963, he was sent to the east, a neutral zone in his feud with the north.”
Federal prosecutor had demanded for a death sentence to be handed to Mr. Kanu but presiding judge Justice James Omotosho in his ruling said: “I must temper justice with mercy. The court will follow the admonition of Jesus Christ in the above passage and show mercy to the convict. In addition, the death penalty globally is being frowned upon by the international community.”
