Vigilantes of the Aiyetoro Kiri community in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Wednesday resisted an attempt by Fulani militia bandits to kidnap students from the Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri.
The bandits stormed the community in the early hours of Wednesday, but the Kiri Vigilante Group quickly mobilised to counterattack the invading gunmen and prevented them from taking away the students. One vigilante member and one other man were killed in the ensuing gun battle.
This targeting of a school by the Fulani militias is coming after Schools in Kebbi and Niger States were attacked and students kidnapped. On Monday 24 girls snatched from the Government Girls Secodary School Maga, Kebbi regain their freedom after a week in captivity. The 250 students kidnapped from the St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri Niger State, reamain in captivity.
More than 400 people, mostly schoolchildren, have been seized since around mid-November, drawing condemnation from the United Nations and global religious leaders. The United Nations has condemned the surge, urging Nigeria to take “all lawful measures” to halt the attacks and ensure accountability.
