Super Eagles and Fulham FC midfielder Alex Iwobi believes that at the African Cup of Nations starting next month in Morocco, Nigeria will do well to win the title.
Iwobi was one of the Super Eagles players who had a low rating when Nigeria failed to beat Congo DR and advance in the World Cup playoffs. But he is “speaking it into reality,” the Super Eagles will lift the AFCON title based on their silver winning run in the 2023 edition in Cote d’Ivoire.
“We were really close at the last AFCON but the only way we can improve on it is to win it,” Iwobi said during a chat on the AySuga Channel.
“We have the players to do it, we believe we can, we just have to prove it.”
“The upcoming AFCON, I would like to speak it into existence, I want to say Nigeria (will win the Afcon).”
The Super Eagles against all odds had a fantastic run at 2023 AFCON drawing against Equatorial Guinea and beating host Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau in the group games.
In the round of 16 the Super Eagles despatched Cameroon. They beat Angola in quarters and then subduing South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the semis on penalty shootout. In the final Cote d’Ivoire backed by home support came from a goal down to beat the Super Eagles 2-1.
Based on their struggles in the World Cup qualifiers, the Super Eagles do resemble the team that can compete in Morocco when the AFCON begins.
The Super Eagles lack the fighting spirit, players who do not want take responsibility and a technical crew that is average.
