Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong said the team has young players like Victor Osimhen who can lead as they prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Troost-Ekong who is retiring from international football believe that the Super Eagles can carry on and do great with crop of young players in the squad.
“The team is ready because we’ve got great leaders. Now is the moment for them to claim that” he told The Standard.
“I think there is a natural progression and there is an art in knowing when to step away.
“There is no shortage of talent, but things in the organisation can and need to be better. The talent needs to be discovered and nurtured. I’d love to help improve that moving forward.”
Troost-Ekong said he would be watching the AFCON from the stands or from the comfort of his living room whatever the case might be.
“Selfishly, I would have loved to lift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and play at one more World Cup.
“But I’ll be proud seeing the players out there and I really hope they win it. That would be a nice moment to crown our generation. I’d still feel part of that.
“Nigerian football is so close to my heart. It will always be a part of me.”
After the Super Eagles failed to beat Congo DR and advance to the intercontinental playoffs Troost-Ekong who played 83 times and scored eight goals for the Super Eagles told his teammates that he is done, despite pleas for him to stay on, he insisted that his time was up.
