The military junta in Niger Republic said they will begin to screen all goods and people coming into their country from Nigeria.
This is coming at the heels of a Nigeria Air Force C-130 plane landing in Burkina Faso and provoking the fury of the juntas ruling in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. They all pulled out of the ECOWAS block and formed the Alliance of Sahel States, following rejection of their regimes.
Niger and Nigeria share a land border of almost 1600km with multiple official and unofficial entry points in Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi States.
The junta in Niger said in a circular to the Nigeria Customs that the measure was taken due to the security situation in norther Nigeria and the entire Sahel region.
“I have the honour to inform you that, for security reasons, all goods coming from Nigeria, particularly goods classified as miscellaneous, must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities,” the junta said.
“However, goods, even if classified as miscellaneous, that are accompanied by documents from the port of unloading shall only be unloaded at their final destination or at the time of customs clearance formalities.”
Niger, Nigeria relations became strained despite their shared linguistic and cultural tradition, when the military overthrew the democratically elected government of Mohammed Bazoum in 2023.
