Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed has denied any link with terror financing in the country even as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested his commissioner for finance.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Government House in Bauchi, the governor described the accusations as “shocking and absurd.”
“I was shocked to hear that I have been accused of terrorism as a sitting governor. I am not a terrorist, I have nothing to do with terrorism, and I will never condone criminality of any kind,” he said during a ceremony where he received an Award of Excellence as a Safety Ambassador from the Safety Institute of Nigeria.
He accused the federal government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to “persecute” him and members of his cabinet over their refusal to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The EFCC Wednesday arraigned Yakubu Adamu, and his co-defendants on alleged $9.7 million terrorism financing.
They were arraigned on a 10-count charge before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr Adamu, the 1st defendant, was arraigned alongside Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed, who are 2nd to 4th defendants respectively.
They were alleged to have transfered the funds belonging to Bauchi State to Bello Bodejo who is the president of Miyeti Allah Kautal Hore for terror releted activities.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the counts preferred against them by the anti-graft agency.
Justice Nwite, who adjourned the matter until January 5 for ruling, ordered that the defendants to be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the decision.
